Love is what? A universal formula does not exist. But scientists can't agree on what pushes us on to this feeling. Hormones? The structure of the brain? Instincts? We tried to understand.
That's important to you: a universal formula of love does not exist. Scientists can't agree on what should be considered the primary impetus, that is motivation. Hormones? The structure of the brain? Instincts? The pursuit of happiness?
There is a version that the ability to love manages Nazargaleevsky motivational need, which was invented by nature for the sake of the human community. Simply put, we evolved as a noble creature, which is not only to eat but to sleep bring, but also high feelings. Stricter judge people by psychologists that explain the love in all the pleasure-seeking, like drug addicts and overeaters. And this theory is worth considering in more detail. Surely, many thought, that the pleasure here is the same as sex and diamonds birthday.
The reward system
The concept of "reward system" (or "system of pleasure" reward system) was formulated by the American researchers James olds and Peter Milner, amused when implanted in gray matter of rats electrodes. During the experiments, the scientists found that activating a specific network of cells and fibers running from the frontal lobes to the brain stem, stopping the hypothalamus, gives sentient beings the more than pleasant feeling. But to feel the response of the reward system do not have to stick to a reasonable electrodes is sufficient to start the internal process, the main players which are recognized as "happy hormones" dopamine and serotonin.
The brain, incidentally, did not share the pleasure of sex, food addictions or career. So there is no difference what an individual perceives as the coveted object, – reward system to explain the motivation, though money and fame, at least for family comfort, at least for gambling. But the experience of the human civilization proves that love is the most coveted of stable cycles of reward. Like the proverbial carrot – reach, and you will have happiness.Defining the object of passion, the brain celebrates this event with fireworks chemical compounds that cause excitation, euphoria, closeness, comfort, a sense associated with pleasure. And complex organ inside the head wishes to extend them at any cost – such a response is crucial for the survival of our species.
Interestingly, sexual maturity and reproduction there is almost nothing, just sexual behaviour was a convenient basis on which people have built large-scale biological concept. Happiness in relationships – is also fun, though psychological, direct way to launch a reward system.
Hormone mood dopamine
As always, blame the hormones. Known to all sex steroids, estrogen and testosterone in the first place, provide libido in men and women. But sexual activity and loving these hormones are not affected, but only create the possibility of attraction. So while scientists can not explain why when the level of testosterone in the normal range one faithful husband, the other is a lonely recluse, and a third saulny womanizer.
Feelings and attraction, of course, not the same, however, and it's all about hormones. Summarizing the insights of many colleagues, American psychiatrist Anthony Walsh in his book "The Science of Love: Understanding Love and Its Effects on Mind and Body" (1991) States: elation, giddiness and excitement that accompany passionate love, are caused by increased secretion of dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and especially phenylethylamine.
The latter precedes and accompanies the release of dopamine, but its effect is unique in its kind. How much joy is able to broadcast this amine whose life is limited a matter of minutes! We all owe him all these butterflies in my stomach – when thoughts of the beloved, his sexy look (or SARS), the anticipation of the date of the first minutes of the game, touching... Working time of the molecules dopamine and adrenaline, fortunately, is estimated hours – and that they prolong our joy in the power of the senses.
Dopamine, the hormone of well-being, – the start button of the remuneration system. The joy of career or sporting victory – is a dopamine. The bride's happiness, to get the hand and heart on him again. Alcohol and drugs – dopamine. Sexual immorality – it also. The love of my life – as you've probably guessed, the dopamine. However, overdose of this hormone is a possible side effect. It not only provides a focus on goals, promising the release of a new dose (so loving difficult to focus on things not related to the object of adoration), but also provokes further chemical reaction, and those lead to decreased levels of serotonin, responsible for good mood, memory and cognitive function. Hence, the typical symptoms of love: longing for the beloved, emotional instability, Intrusive thoughts and failed exams.
The stress hormone adrenaline
Pay attention: when someone you really like, you get nervous when meeting him? Palms sweat, mouth gets dry, your heart is racing... You can feel the adrenaline boiling in your blood, because that's what it is. In the early stages of a romantic relationship, the brain activates the stress response (how else to call what happens to the lovers?). And sends a signal to the adrenal glands to produce nor-epinephrine, which produces adrenaline, a hormone mobilization. That is released into the bloodstream, fitting the organism to unusual situations: it increases the frequency and force of cardiac contractions, breathing depth, rate of metabolism, muscle performance.
Simultaneously with the production of adrenaline in response to a common stress triggered the production of hormones of joy-endorphins. That is, those chemical compounds that normalize blood pressure, improve reaction time, mood and the speed of adaptation of the organism to stress. Soaring endorphins is able to bring to euphoria (including orgasm), and we have something just right.
The hormone Oxycontin tenderness
All the parts of the brain contribute in the mood for love part according to their functions. The structure of the right hemisphere (responsible for impulsivity, creativity, intuition) in the sensitive period are activated, whereas the left (rational, critical, logic, calculation, abstract thinking, social norms), on the contrary, there is a kind of braking. As a result, we lose the sobriety of judgment, dislike spelling mistakes in SMS, and the like negatively-preservative emotions.
Here, too, is not without intermediaries. On the scene oxytocin, the hormone of tenderness, devotion, calmness and empathy. His superpower is to influence the activity of tonsils of the brain, forming the primary reaction of fear and aggression. What do you get? That's right – decrease distrust, anxiety, and stress. The concentration of oxytocin in both sexes increases in hugging, kissing, during orgasm. In women, the level of this hormone increases besides during childbirth and breastfeeding, which partially facilitates such difficult processes.
